I think this is a good summary particularly about the phone being great for getting info.

One point I'd add about the "in person" approach is the expense and time consuming element. So, probably reserve this approach for  very local venues or those which pay well or can help your bands credibility by playing there (ie, "profitable").

RE the demo, an edit of snippets of 10 tracks can work well too - although agree the overall length shouldn't be overly long.
